Thomas Hitzlsperger was born in Munich and began to form his football skills at the young age of six when he joined the VfB Forstinning youth team Driven by his love of the sport and dedication to achieving his career of becoming a professional footballer, Thomas Hitzlsperger continued to pursue his ambitions throughout his youth. As his training progressed, he was signed to the Bayern Munich Junior Team where he developed his talents further over the years before eventually leaving at the end of the 1999-2000 season. He had laid the foundations for his future as he was soon being recognised overseas. After an initial trial with Celtic the up and coming footballer eventually found his big break when he joined Aston Villa on a free youth transfer from Bayern Munich and made his debut in 2001 in a match against Liverpool.
Thomas Hitzlsperger’s Football Career
During his time at Aston Villa Thomas Hitzlsperger was also briefly loaned out for a stretch at the second division club Chesterfield. He made several appearances in the league before he was recalled to Aston Villa and scored his first senior goal for the team in 2002. He eventually left the team in 2005 after building a reputation as a fan favourite and earning the nickname The Hammer for his powerful shots from a long range. Following this he went on to play for German club VfB Stuttgart and was a key element in a lot of their success. He remained on the team for five years. Since leaving he went on to play for Lazio, West Ham United, Wolfsburg and Everton before eventually retiring in 2013. During his time as a footballer he also played for the German national team, being selected for both the 2006 World Cup and Euro 2008 and overall earning 52 caps. After retirement he has gone on to be appointed the head of sport at VfB Stuttgart.

Throughout his successful career, Thomas Hitzlsperger carved out a name for himself in the competitive world of football. This has led to him winning a variety of award including the German Football Ambassador 2015 Honorary Award, the Ethics Award of the DJK Sports Association and twice won Bundesliga Player of the month in 2007. Additionally, he won the Silver Laurel Leaf which is Germany’s highest award for achievements in the world of sport.
