Early Promise
Born and raised in Kirby in Lancashire Phil Thompson was surrounded by iconic footballing influences. With players such as Dennis Mortimer attending the same school as him and football being a very prominent sport in the town it was a natural path for him to start pursuing a career as a professional footballer. Phil Thompson signed his first contract at fifteen as an apprentice before his dreams came true and he eventually signed as a professional with Liverpool on his seventeenth birthday. His debut was against Manchester United in 1972.

Phil Thompson’s Football Career
As his career began to flourish and he made his mark on the pitch, Phil Thompson was called up to play for the England team in 1976 in a friendly against Wales then again in a friendly against Italy during a mini tournament later that year. The latter match was when Phil Thompson scored his first only goal for England. Following a brief spell where he had to sit out due to an injury, Thompson took to the pitch again for Liverpool in 1977 and helped secure their victory in the UEFA Super Cup Final that same year. Blazing a trail through the industry, his time at Liverpool saw him helping them win their first European Cup in consecutive years, as well as making captain and lifting the League trophy in 1980 and then the European Cup once more the next year. After a long career at Liverpool he went on to play for Sheffield United but could not settle and eventually decided to retire at the age of 31. Following this he went on to become assistant manager at Liverpool where he also took over as caretaker when manager Gerard Houllier was ill. He stayed there for almost six year before stepping down.

Phil Thompson’s Awards and Honours
With a successful career that has seen him achieve a lot in the world of football, Phil Thompson has received a wealth of awards and honours for his work. In November 2001 he was named as the Premier League Manager of the Month, an award he received again the following year in March. Phil Thompson also won the European Cup 3 times, the UEFA Cup twice and the FA Charity Shield 6 times whilst playing for Liverpool. He also teaches a Football Industries MBA as a visiting fellow at the University of Liverpool.
