Business Ambitions
Growing up on the outskirts of Swindon, Nick Hewer was the son of a veterinarian and was sent to a Jesuit Boarding School in Ireland for his education. In the 1960’s Nick Hewer moved to London and took his first steps into the business world when he began working as a trainee for a PR Agency. A fast learner and ambitious twenty-year-old, he worked his way up through the company and joined the board after just six years. Shortly after he bought out the owner and became the sole shareholder. After years representing clients such as the secretariat of HH the Aga Khan, his career reached even bigger heights when the company was hired by Armstrad, consequently beginning his friendship with Alan Sugar. In 1988, he eventually sold his agency and moved to France.
Television Appearances
After living the quiet life for several years Nick Hewer was eventually encouraged back into business by his friend Alan Sugar. The magnate invited him to be his trusted adviser on The Apprentice, with the series airing in 2005 and soon becoming an immensely popular BBC series. Nick Hewer spent over ten series on the show, acting as Alan Sugar’s eyes and ears and gaining favour with the shows fans for his wittily dry remarks and withering looks. This popularity led to him being invited to test for the role of presenter on long-running Channel 4 series Countdown. He got the job, coming out tops above rivals such as Terry Wogan and Sue Barker. He has been the presenter of Countdown since 2012, becoming one of the longest-serving ones since the shows original host Richard Whiteley. In 2014, Nick Hewer decided to step down from The Apprentice.
Other Work and Achievements
As well as his time as an adviser and Countdown presenter, Nick Hewer has worked on several other projects and shows. In 2012, he presented a show called ‘The Farm Fixer’ where he helped Northern Ireland farmers with diversifying. He has also been host on several other shows alongside Margaret Mountford including ‘Nick and Margaret: Too Many Immigrants?’ which looked at the impact of attitudes towards immigrants. Nick Hewer’s engaging on screen persona has also led to him appearing on numerous panel shows such as ‘Have I Got News For You’, ‘Would I Lie To You’ and ‘Room 101’. For his work, Nick Hewer received an Honorary Doctor of Letters degree from Kingston University in 2012.
