Learning the Ropes
John Pienaar was born in Middlesex to South African parents. Growing up in London he began his education at Bromley Technical High School, getting his first taste of writing and journalism. Following this, he went on to study and get his National Council for the Training of Journalists qualification, also known as NCTJ, at Highbury College in Portsmouth. Once he had succeeded in this, Jon Pienaar took his first plunge into the world of journalism when he kicked off a career at the South London Press. He was a local newspaper trainee building up his experience and knowledge covering the many facets of crime, sport and courts that was happening in the area. This led to him becoming an Old Bailey correspondent, shaping his reputation as a journalist and opening a variety of career paths.
John Pienaar’s Journalistic Career
Once John Pienaar had carved a path into the competitive world of current affairs and journalism he began to take on a wealth of roles. Starting off as a political correspondent on prestigious publications such as The Guardian and The Press Association. He also worked at The Independent in 1986 as a member of Tony Bevins’ team, while there he wrote numerous sketches even producing a weekly parliamentary sketch that was called The Westminster Diary which often provoked a lot of controversy.
John Pienaar’s Televison Career
It was in 1992, that John Pienaar made his first television appearance, joining the BBC as a political correspondent. He appeared on various current affairs programmes and shows, both on TV and on radio, sharing his knowledge and expertise on numerous political topics. He has been a steadfast reporter in the political world, showing his merits and subsequently becoming Chief Political Correspondent at Radio 5 Live. On the channel, he hosts his Sunday morning show Pienaar’s Politics. Continuing to make his mark, in 2015 John Pienaar was also asked to be the BBC’s Deputy Political Editor. Outside of his work, John Pienaar is a devoted fan of Crystal Palace football team and frequently attends their games.
