Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink was born in Suriname and raised in Zaandam near Amsterdam. His childhood was a turbulent one but football was a consistent factor throughout his youth and could be thought to have saved him from a darker path. He initially joined the youth team at DWS before going on to play for the senior team at Telstar, making his debut in Eerste Divisie in 1990. Soon he began training with his brother at AZ Alkmaar and attracted the attention of the club who he won a professional contract with. Following stints training with various clubs, he got a break when he was scouted by Portugal side Campomaiorense which helped to revitalize his career and ultimately set him on track to sign with Leeds United in the summer of 1997.

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink’s Football Career
Following his signing with Leeds United, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink went on to make his name in English football. His second season at the club he scored an impressive 18 goals in 36 appearances, ultimately leading to him winning the Premier League Golden Boot. In 1999, he was bought by the Spanish club Atletico Madrid and helped fuel the club forward with consistent goals, winning the league’s Silver Boot Award. After the team were relegated, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink was freed from his contract and returned to the Premier League in 2000 after signing with Chelsea for a record £15 million fee. He had a triumphant debut, helping them win the 2000 FA Charity Shield, again he stormed through the seasons with frequent goals but narrowly missed out on the Golden Boot to Theirry Henry. He played for Chelsea for four years and went on to play for Middlesbrough, Charlton Athletic and Cardiff City before his retirement. Over the course of his career he also played for the Netherlands on multiple occasions including the 1998 FIFA World Cup and UEFA Euro 2004.
