Irini Tzortzoglou’s Early Promise
Born and raised in Crete, Irini Tzortzoglou grew up in a small village as the youngest of three children. The household was one filled with a variety of fresh, home-grown and home-cooked food, in a loving, family orientated environment. With parents from Crete and Anatolia, Irini Tzortzoglou experienced a diverse upbringing with different cultures. An element that has inspired her future in cooking as well as other areas of her life. Irini Tzortzoglou first started shaping a career in hospitality when she began working at her uncle’s hotel before moving to London in 1980 where she embarked on a career as a banker. Alongside this she studied for a degree in the History of Art, a creative skill set that has also influenced her cooking.
Irini Tzortzoglou’s Culinary Career
After working as a banker for the National Greek Bank of Greece over the years, Irini Tzortzoglou eventually retired at the age of 50. She then moved to Cartmel in Cumbria with her husband John, turning her sights back to cooking and experimenting with new dishes. She was eventually encouraged to apply for MasterChef in 2018, entering the competition in the hope of inspiring her grandchildren and the older generation. With many of her meals featuring ingredients from her Greek roots, Irini Tzortzoglou impressed the judges with her delicious dishes that included fig leaf ice-cream, squid risotto and griddled lamb chops. Her talents fuelled her on the semi-finals then finals, with John Torode calling her food “magical”. Subsequently, Irini Tzortzoglou was named as the winner of MasterChef 2019 in the first all-female final, delighting many fans of the show.
Irini Tzortzoglou’s Other Work
Alongside her culinary achievements on screen, Irini Tzortzoglou also enjoys working with potters in both the UK and Crete, creating styles and dishes that are inspired by Minoan pottery. As well as this, Irini Tzortzoglou also works with graphic designers on making fabrics that are influenced by both her Greek heritage and Greek plant life.
