During University, he developed a taste for sample-based music after being given a collection of old records. Inspired, Gotye went on to create a CD with four tracks which he then sent out to every record company and radio station he could think of. The move proved to be a good one as he received a variety of positive feedback and was fuelled on to produce more music. After putting together four more albums in the same format, with many tracks getting airplay from radio station Triple J, Gotye bagged a distribution deal from Creative Vibes and went on to release his official debut album ‘Boardface’ in 2003.

Gaining Recognition
Following this step into the spotlight Gotye found inspiration for his second album from his ever-changing living circumstances, having to adapt to each new home studio when he moved. The album, ‘Like Drawing Blood’ gained notoriety when it was voted no.1 in Triple J’s listener poll as the Best Album of 2006 and subsequently became certified platinum in Australia. This album also boosted his reputation overseas and was soon re-released in the US in 2012 after several years where Gotye’s name and music spread like wildfire.

The success also earned Gotye a permanent home, and he set up a studio at his parent’s farm to start working on his next album. The first single ‘Eyes Wide Open’ set the precedent for the album with a wealth of positive reception, but it was the next track ‘Somebody That I Used to Know’ that sent Gotye’s career to stratospheric new heights. The single topped the charts across the world, taking the globe by storm and selling over 13 million copies. The resulting album ‘Making Mirrors’ also debuted at the top of the charts and continued Gotye’s incredible success, with an abundance of critical acclaim and becoming triple platinum certified in Australia.

Gotye has had a breath-taking rise to fame with his unique and memorable music, establishing himself as a talented and exciting musician in the industry. This talent has won him 3 Grammy’s, five ARIA Awards and an MTV Europe Music Award among many others.
