Early Promise
Born in Wolverhampton to Jamaican parents, Beverley Knight was raised in a strict Pentecostal house where church was an important element of family life. This was where her singing career was born, following in her mum’s footsteps Beverley Knight would sing at her local church and was widely influenced by gospel music throughout her youth. Discovering a passion for music, she began to pursue singing and got her break when she sang on the demos of Wolverhampton singer Westley Jones who introduced her to Dome Records. However, she first decided to focus on her education as groundwork for something to fall back on, studying Religious Theology and Philosophy before eventually signing with the label in 1994.
Beverley Knight’s Music Career

The record, titled ‘The B-Funk’ led to Knight receiving a variety of awards and was even called ‘the best British Soul Album ever’ by critics. Her second album followed over three years later after she changed labels and teamed up with a new set of producers. ‘Prodigal Sista’ had greater commercial success than its predecessor and helped to put Beverley Knight on the map, becoming certified gold in 1999. It also went on to win three MOBO awards. The soul singer quickly started work on her next album ‘Who I Am’ which was released in 2002 and shot to number seven on the UK Albums Chart, she has released nine albums to date. Alongside this she has found fame on screen as well with roles on shows such as ‘Just the Two Of Us’ and ‘Beverley’s Gospel Nights’, with the latter exploring the origins and influence of gospel music.
