Saint Patrick’s Day (The Feast of Saint Patrick) is a public holiday in Northern Ireland and The Republic of Ireland and is held on the 17 March – widely believed to be the day of Saint Patrick’s death, the Patron Saint of Ireland. The day commemorates Saint Patrick and the arrival of Christianity in Ireland and celebrates the heritage and culture of the Irish in general.

Did you know?
Patrick was a nobleman born in about 400 A.D. in Britain, early in his life he was an atheist and at the age of 16, he was kidnapped by Irish pirates! After 17 years as a slave, Patrick escaped Ireland and found his way home, but returned to Ireland as a missionary and later became the Patron Saint of Ireland.
Shamrocks
Irish folklore has it that St. Patrick used the three-leaved shamrock to explain the Christian Holy Trinity. Consequently, on Saint Patrick’s Day people wear shamrocks on their coats and closed Saint Patrick’s Day by “drowning the shamrock” i.e placing the shamrock in a glass of whiskey before drinking!
Guinness
On St. Patrick’s Day, Guinness (Irish stout) is the drink of the day – indeed on St. Patrick’s Day, about 3 million pints of Guinness are downed!
