What is the history of Halloween?
Halloween originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (Shamhna) on 1st of November which marked the end of summer and the harvest and, the beginning of winter. Celts believed that on the night before the new year, October 31, the ghosts of the dead returned to earth. To ward off ghosts, on Samhain, pagans would wear costumes, light bonfires and offer food and drink.
Why do we trick or treat?
It’s believed that trick or treating evolved from Samhain’s ritual where people dressed as ghosts and demons, performed dances around a bonfire and received treats to appease the evil spirits. Trick or treating can trace its roots back to 9th century Celtic Scotland and Ireland. In Scotland and Ireland, young people would visit their neighbours’ houses and perform a “trick” like singing a song, reciting a poem and be rewarded with a treat of nuts, fruit or coins. Apparently the first mention of the term “trick or treating” in print was on November 4 1927 in Canada.
