The UK’s first chocolate egg was produced in 1873 by J. S. Fry & Sons (Bristol).
The idea of the Easter bunny is said to have originated in Germany during the middle ages and is bizarrely an egg-laying hare called “Osterhase” or “Oschter Haws.”! Why?
A theory is that it’s related to Maundy Thursday before Easter which was typically the end of the business year for farmers who would have to pay their landowners. The farmers had a surplus of eggs because of fasting during Lent, so they would often pay their landowners with cooked eggs and hares they had killed in their fields. So Hares became associated with eggs!
Though the Easter egg is symbolic of the resurrection of Jesus Christ for Christians for others it symbolises joy, celebration and new life.
Painting Easter eggs is a tradition of Orthodox and Eastern Catholic churches where the eggs are dyed red to represent the blood of Jesus Christ that was shed on the cross.
