What is Carnival?
Some believe carnival originated in ancient Egypt as a Pagan feast to celebrate the beginning of spring. When Christianity spread throughout Europe, the celebration became a food festival, because it was the last time to eat abundantly before the 40 days of Lent, a period of frugality starting on Ash Wednesday. This is reflected by the name Carne – Vale, carne meaning meat and vale meaning farewell in Latin i.e. farewell to meat!
Carnaval do Rio de Janeiro
Carnaval do Rio de Janeiro (Rio de Janeiro Carnival) is the world’s biggest carnival which has been running annually since 1723 but which dates back to the 1640s. The Carnival is celebrated 46 days before the Easter festival.
Notting Hill Carnival
As an offshoot of the Trinidad Carnival, The Notting Hill Carnival was first held in 1966 to celebrate Caribbean culture and traditions in London. It is starts on the Sunday before and ends on August bank holiday Monday.
